The "Freshman 15": A phrase that most girls dread hearing when talking about college. For those who do not know, the "Freshman 15" is the popular expression used that refers to the amount of weight one usually gains during the first year of college. Good news ladies! The Freshman 15 is completely avoidable if you follow these tips to stay fit and healthy.

Growing up, my mom had always made me smoothies every morning for breakfast allowing me to kick off a great and healthy start to the day. I am a strong believer that these smoothies have been a key element in keeping me healthy and slim for years. What's in some of these smoothies you may ask? Well, below is a simple yet yummy smoothie recipe that will leave you feeling refreshed and ready for the day.

Power Breakfast Smoothie:

- 1/2 gala apple

- 1 banana

- 1 cup frozen mixed berries

- 1/4 of flax or chia seeds

- 8 oz greek yogurt or nonfat yogurt

- 1/2 cup orange or apple juice

Directions:

-Place all ingredients into a blender.

-Blend on high until smooth.

Serves: 2

While I have a VitaMix Blender at home, there are many other blending devices and options. One awesome device that is worth investing in is a NutriBullet. They are affordable, easy to operate, and convenient to store.

Drinking a smoothie in the morning will change your world. For starters, smoothies are loaded with nutrients and super foods. They are a quick, easy, and delicious way to consume whole fruits and vegetables into your diet. I cannot remember the last time I had a trip to the doctor's office for being sick. I have been able to avoid any illness such as the flu, common cold, you name it. These smoothies keep me healthy and keeps off weight so I can avoid the Freshman 15. Like many people, I am extremely busy, and drinking smoothies in the mornings provides me with a huge boost of energy.
